in case a device fails or file becomescorrupted. if you work with confidential orsensitive information, be sure to follow your agency'sestablished protocols for working with and saving these files. storage media are devices where you cansave your data other than on your computer, tablet, orphone. they can be used to save backup copies of files to move files to another computer, orto share files with another person some examples include external harddrives,
usb flash drives, cds/dvds, network drives, magnetic tape, floppydisks, memory cards, or cloud storage. whilethese options make it easy to save and backup data, be careful if you depend on flash drives, cds or dvds, or memory cards. they very portable and easy to use, butare also easily damaged or lost because if theirsmall size. in many offices, network storage is used by employees to store and share files.
this storage space is often organize into shared folders on a server. based on permissions, you can access other people's filessaved in a network drive, making sharing and updating documents easy the network drives are usually backed up by it staff, but how frequently files are backedup varies among offices. don't assumeeverything on a network drive is there forever. check with your it staff about retentionpolicies.
magnetic tapes are used when large amounts of data need to be stored, but accessing the files quickly isn'tnecessarily required. accessing individual files is slow unless paired with a tape library. this option is most often used forbackups in large businesses, data centers, andgovernment agencies. usb flash drives, also known as memorysticks or thumb drives, plug directly into yourcomputer's usb port, and appear as a drive where you can storefiles. flash drives are commonly used because of their smallsize, large-capacity
and ease of use. external hard drives arecommonly used to store large amounts of data, and connect your computer with a cable. there are two types: hard disks and and solid state drives. hard disk drives are like the hard drivethat's in your computer, and contain a spinning disk. solid statedrives are newer, have no moving parts, and are more resistant to shock and damage, however they are more expensive. thedrives are used to backup files
or transfer them to another anothercomputer. cds and dvds store data in the form of tiny dots thatare read with a laser beam. there are multiple kinds of cds and dvds including those that can have data burnt onto them, those that cannot, and high-capacitydislike blu-rays or high-definition dvds. cds and dvds are not used as much as they once were forfile storage. while they are great for quicklyaccessing files, their life expectancies are not verylong, and there are of varying levels of
quality making the data stored on themvulnerable. many digital devices such as cameras, cellphones, and mp3 players require memory cards. cameras often usedsd cards to store photos, and cell phones use sim cards that savethe phone's number, contacts, text messages, and otherinformation. newer cell phones can have micro sdcards to save music, videos, and photos. floppy disks are now obsolete, but still familiar. they came in the 8 inch,
5.25 inch, and 3.5 inch sizes. pcs used to come with a floppy disk drive, but now it would be difficult to findone. floppy disk are a good example of an early removable storage media. they were cheap, portable, but also had lowcapacity and were slow. if you still have data saved on floppydisks you should look into migrating thatdata onto a newer storage medium. cloud storage is a newer option, andcan be viewed as both secondary and off-line storage.
your files are saved onto someone else'sservers, which you access through an internet browser. people can use cloud storage as another drive on their computer or as remote backup storage for their computer. cloud backups are great for data you have saved on a device already, just in case your device malfunctions. for example, if you type your password incorrectlytoo many times on an ipad you can be locked out, and may have to delete all of your data to unlock your device. while deleting the data in the event your device is stolen is a good thing,
