Food Network Magazine Customer Service
i came to el paso in 1981 from mexico. i came here looking at a better lifefor my son and myself. my son wanted to start a little business selling candies. so we decided to buy an ice cream truck.
Food Network Magazine Customer Service, we should have a chance to make a living. i don't want to be living on food stamps or welfare or anything like that. street vending has long been an entry pointto business ownership and entrepreneurship in america,
but across the country cities like el pasoare trying to shut down the street vendors in order to protect brick and mortar businessesfrom honest competition. --where i vend i've got loyal customers, i've got a good relationship withthem, also, and the only thing that's keeping me right now from vending is i've got the city running me off. --el paso isnow trying to shut down street vendors by making it virtually impossible to sell food on citystreets. a new law prohibits street vendors from operating within 1,000 feet ofany restaurant or a convenience store or even grocer. where in el paso can youfind a location that isn't within one thousand feet of a restaurant or convenient store?
virtually nowhere. -these laws only serve onepurpose, and that's to protect brick and mortar businesses from competition, but naked protectionism is not a constitutionalexercise of government power. that's why ij has sued el paso in federal court.this lawsuit will have national implications. that's because from coast to coast citieshave enacted all sorts of protectionist restrictions on vending. a victory for ij's clients in el paso wouldbe an important first step in eliminating these kinds of laws which punish entrepreneurship and hard work.-and we're not even on welfare or anything. we work and work and work.is it a crime to work,
so i guess i'm a criminal, it is a crime to be working. for more on this case which marks the beginningof ij's nationwide initiative to vindicate the right of street vendors to earn an honestliving go to ij.org.
