the deaf and hearing network starts now...hi, my name is peyton gallovich and i'm currently a sophomore here at asu. right now i'm a journalismmajor and i'm focusing on broadcast. for graduation you have to have a foreign language and soi decided to pick asl. i thought it would be easy, but i was really wrong.we'll go back to the vo's in a second. none of my family is deaf, none of my friendsare deaf. i didn't meet a deaf person until
University Of Arizona Health Network, college. but i started taking class and ireally wanted to find a way to kind of continue with sign language because i had no reasonto continue after the four years. and so, i decided to do dhn and at first i wantedto do just a deaf news, just deaf people signing the news. keep it really deaf news oriented.but then i started getting on the internet
and that's already out there. there's alreadya lot of deaf news agencies that focus on deaf news and have the anchors signing. soi needed to figure out a way to differentiate myself and make the dhn new.i kind of came up with the idea and i was a little hesitant. i thought "oh, i'm goingto get a lot of negative feedback on this." i went to dyan the co-owner of dhn, and iwent to a couple of other deaf people and kind of just tested the waters a bit. sheand everyone else were like, "woah, this is an amazing idea! i love it, let's do it."so i was just like, "okay! maybe there is a need for it."we've gotten lot's of positive critiques. people saying, "this is what we needed, thisis what we want." because hearing news is
a little bit harder to access for deaf peoplebecause english really is a different language to deaf people. a lot of people think thatsign language is based on english but it's not, it's its own language. this is finallya way to be up to date on local news not just deaf news, in your language. my big big dream,you know, like up in the clouds is, i would love dhn to continue on. i just am not hereto just go through the world. i really, i just want to make something of myself andeven if i'm only important to the media world or something, or if i get more important ina lot of people's lives, i just want to make an impact and this is my, my impact.perfect.
